Is it time for new siding? Well, there’s never been a better time with more quality option to choose from in siding than today. You have seven main types of siding to choose from with a price range from affordable to expensive.
Seven Types of Siding Options
Here are your options in siding:
- Vinyl
- Wood
- Aluminum & Steel
- Fiber Cement & Composite
- Stucco
- Brick & Stone Veneer
- Faux Stone
Here are some considerations of each, with the types of siding arranged from the lowest cost to the highest cost (when you include materials and installation).
Vinyl ($4.15 – $8.50 per sq ft installed)
Vinyl comes in a huge array of options to choose from and will last two to three decades. It is probably the easiest choice for the DIY enthusiast. One plus is that it’s recyclable. It stands up well against the elements too.
Wood ($4.15 – $14.00 per sq ft installed)
Wood also comes in a huge variety of options and it can last over 50 years if it’s well maintained. You would have to be a pretty good DIYer in order to install this yourself.
Aluminum & Steel ($5.20 – $10.65 per sq ft installed)
These metals have fewer options to choose from, but they typically last three to five decades and they are recyclable too. These are harder to install yourself than vinyl by far.
Fiber Cement & Composite ($5.80 – $12.00 per sq ft installed)
You shouldn’t try to install fiber cement and composite yourself. While it’s not recyclable, it’s typically made from sustainable materials. This will last three to five decades just like the metal options.
Stucco ($7.90 – $12.50 per sq ft installed)
Don’t try to do your own stucco siding. It’s very hard to stucco a home’s exterior. When installed properly, it can last well over half of a century. It offers good weatherproofing but doesn’t have a lot of options.
Brick & Stone Veneer ($14.65 – $26.00 per sq ft installed)
This is the longest lasting material to side your house. It will last over 75 years when maintained. It offers the best weatherproofing and comes in a variety of options.
Faux Stone ($14.70 – $31.00 per sq ft installed)
Faux Stone is the most expensive option you can choose from. When comparing it to real stone, realize that faux stone costs more and lasts only between 30 and 50 years. Still, if you’re simply replacing your siding, this is a much more realistic option.
