Don’t Forget To Clean Out Your Garage When You’re Preparing Your House For Sale

If you’re working on preparing your home for sale for an open house or potential buyers that might want to swing in, don’t forget to get to work on your garage as well. Garages are a big selling point, but for some home buyers, a cluttered two car garage seem like it could only ever hold one car. Despite the listing information, they might just not be able to envision both cars in your garage.

Plus, if someone walks into a garage and it’s full of cobwebs, wasp nests or mice droppings, it will feel gross to them. No matter how much you promise to clear the garage out before you leave, they may always just picture it in a state of disarray if that’s how they first view it.

How To Prepare A Garage For Potential Homebuyers

Most people don’t use most of their tools on a regular basis. So, haul off any non-critical tools and put them in storage. Though, if you don’t see yourself using them ever again, this might be a good time to take these items to a second hand store. Some of your tools might have value at a consignment, pawn or resale shop. It might be worth looking into. Also, pack up your irregularly used sports equipment and other clutter too.

Once almost everything is out of the way, move what you have left into the center of the garage. Then sweep the floors from the walls in. Wipe down any shelving units. Use a shop vac to get rid of any particles you can’t get with a broom. Also use this to get out any spider eggs. Knock down all cobwebs. If you notice a wasp nests, eradicate the wasps safely if you know how or call a professional in to be safe.

Next, give the hinges and springs of the garage doors some oil so they will glide nicely and without squeaking and clanking. Check around for any rat poisoning, mouse traps, or other things that will leave a bad feeling with your home’s potential new buyers. remove anything you see that is gross.

Then, go through everything in the middle of the garage and reorganize it. You will probably find that some of these items aren’t even worth hanging onto. In that case, donate or sell those items too. Once everything has a spot, then sweep or shop vac the middle of the garage, so that the entire thing looks tidy.
