How To Register Your Car In New Mexico
If you’re relocating to New Mexico and own a vehicle, you’ll need to know how to register it. You must register your out-of-state car in New Mexico with the New Mexico MVD within 30 days of becoming a resident in the state. So, you do have a little time to get situated before registering your vehicle.
Registering Your Car In New Mexico
You will have to get your vehicle inspected in order to register it. For example, if you live or work in Bernalillo County, you’ll need to bring the Emission Certificate of Inspection. Check to see if you will need an emission inspection here. A vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection will be required for a new registration in the state.
Be sure to bring your certificate of title and proof of car insurance with you. Head to your local New Mexico MVD office. You will also need a proof of identity like a marriage certificate, birth certificate or driver’s license. Also bring two pieces of documentation that prove residency in the state. Examples that will satisfy that requirement include a utility bill, bank statement, lease, or mortgage document. A release of lien may need to be provided too, if your title shows a lien on it.
You will fill out an Application for Vehicle Title and Registration (Form MVD-10002) and you’ll need to bring payment as well. Keep in mind, some vehicles like motorhomes and mopeds may have slightly different processes. Check out the specifics here.
