Plant Blue Grama Grass For Less Mowing And Watering In Angel Fire, New Mexico

Many locals say that the best time to plant blue grama grass is two months before the first frost. So, get your seed now! Germination generally occurs within 7 to 10 days after the soil temperatures warm back up. Blue grama grass will likely need no soil amendments to take off. If the property’s soil is densely packed, you may need to till it. But if it’s not densely packed, tilling is not needed at all.
Now, it’s easiest to just do a dryland seeding. This is where you scatter the seeds and then wait. If you want to start with sod or plugs, you will have to water frequently while it’s established. The great thing about blue grama grass in our mountainous area is that once it’s established on our lawn, you don’t really have to do anything. If you seed it densely, it will even do a nice job suppressing weeds. Blue grama grass is drought-tolerant too.
This native grass has no thatch buildup. It grows slowly, which can be annoying when you first plant it, but is awesome once it’s established. Mowing will be kept at a minimum. For the best lawn health, mow at a high level. Once it’s established, you literally should only water during times of extreme drought.
