Preparing To Sell Your Angel Fire Home: How To Clean Vinyl Siding

If you opted for vinyl siding, you know by now that it needs some care to always look its best. The color will hold, but can appear discolored from dust, dirt, tree sap, mold, grass clippings and pollen. Thankfully, after a good cleaning, you can bring your vinyl siding back to life with little more than a soft cloth and a long-handled soft-bristles brush and vinegar and water. You probably won’t need any expensive cleaners. You can prepare a solution of 70 percent water and 30 percent white vinegar. This solution is safe and can even tackle most types of mold.

If you need something stronger, you can always consider adding a little laundry detergent and backing soda. This way your cleaning solution is still safe for pets and wildlife. Bob Villa Online suggests the following mixture on vinyl siding:

“For a stronger solution, mix together one-third cup powdered laundry detergent, two-thirds cup powdered household cleaner, one quart liquid laundry bleach and one gallon of water.”

Obviously, there are also commercially produced products that have been specifically formulated for cleaning vinyl siding. These products can be used manually or with pressure washers, but if you do opt for a pressure washer, be absolutely sure to stay level with the siding. If you spray from below, you risk the wet solution getting trapped behind the vinyl siding. Many of our Angel Fire real estate clients have even reported that general household cleaners have worked for them. Murphy’s Oil Soap is even reportedly great at cleaning vinyl.

What Not To Use On Vinyl Siding

Never use the following cleaners or tools on your vinyl siding:

  • undiluted bleach
  • acetone
  • liquid grease remover
  • paint scrapers
  • steel wool
  • wired scrub brushes

Using these cleaners or tools will destroy your vinyl siding.

When To Clean Vinyl Siding

If you’re thinking of selling your Angel Fire home, you can always get a head start on cleaning your vinyl siding before listing. This is usually maintenance that will improve the curb appeal of your home. As we enter into spring, choose a mild day when there is no chance of the water freezing and when the wind is low. Make sure you wait until after you have gotten yourself protective eye wear, no matter what type of cleaner you choose!
