Save Energy Without Shelling Out Big Bucks

Most people worry about the amount of electricity they use. For some, it is because of financial reasons. For others, it’s for environmental reasons. Plus, some people are concerned about both. Thankfully, with a little foresight and extra care, you really can save on your energy bill!

Let’s face it, energy efficient appliances are ideal. They often pay for themselves within a year.  Yet, not everyone can afford to replace appliances right now. Thankfully, there are still ways to lower your electrical use.

Refrigerator and Freezer

OK, so you can shell out the big bucks right now on an efficient freezer and fridge. That’s OK! You can still make your appliance work more efficiently. Did you know that it costs much less to operate a full freezer than an empty one? So, fill that freezer! If you sincerely can’t think of anything to fill it with, fill it with gallons of water. It doesn’t matter how you fill it, just keep it full. The same things goes for the fridge. Next, don’t open the door and sit there thinking about what you want. Know what you want before you open the door. This lets the appliance work much less hard.

Cooking In Large Batches

If you’re baking cookies, don’t just bake one dozen cookies. Go all out. Bake a bunch and save them in small batches in the freezer. (Remember, you want to keep it full anyway.) Then, continue to cook once the oven is on. Cook and bake in large sittings, because it will save you on the preheating expense. Plus, don’t open the oven door unless you need to. It takes a lot of energy to get an oven back to temp.

Furnace And Air Conditioning

Of course, investing in a ductless HVAC system would be ideal for efficiency. That’s not always possible though. So, here are some other ways to save.  Curtains can really help regulate the temperature a great deal. Changing the HVAC systems’ filters can also help it work more efficiently. Adjusting your thermostat by just a few degrees can save you hundreds a year! So, if you keep your heat at 70, consider knocking it down to 68 or even 65. Do the reverse for air conditioning in the summer.

Small things like this really can add up!
