Look, popcorn ceilings are out.  “Popcorn ceiling” is the slang term for a spray-on or paint-on ceiling treatment that used to be the standard for bedroom and hallway ceilings. They hide imperfections and offered positive acoustical characteristics, so they were once very popular. These days, people equate them to asbestos and filth. Many used to contain asbestos, and they are pretty hard to clean. They were more likely to get painted than washed. Mostly though, popcorn ceilings date your house in a way few other interior elements can.

So, it might be worth losing the popcorn ceiling. Before trying to remove it yourself, contact the health department to ask about getting a sample tested. If the test comes back positive, do not try to scrape it off. Instead, look into tongue-and-groove planks to cover the ceilings. If they don’t contain asbestos, dedicate a weekend to losing the popcorn texture. The hardware store should have a solution to soften the texture to make scraping easier. It might seem like a lot of work, but it’s one of the cheapest ways to add to the value of your home, since popcorn ceilings can turn buyers away.
