Two Native, Drought-Tolerant Grasses
In previous blog posts, we’ve explained how to keep a lawn green using less water and also about the great properties of the native blue grama grass. We also wanted to let you know about two native primary species of drought-tolerant grasses in our region. Two drought-tolerant grasses are Buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) and blue grama grass (Bouteloua gracilis).
When they’re becoming established, you will need to water, but once they have been established, watering isn’t needed. Plus, you won’t have to mow very often either! These are very low-maintenance alternatives to the Kentucky Bluegrass most people use for lawns.
If you don’t want to go through the effort of establishing these grasses on your own, you can get buffalograss, and actually even blue grama grass, as a sod or as plugs.

Buffalograss will green up around May and stay green through October. It spreads by stolons (above ground stems). This does best in full sun with heavy clay soils.

Blue grama grass spreads with creeping roots called rhizomes. It does best in sandy soils.
