Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in Angel Fire, NM

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in Angel Fire is the first major Vietnam memorial created in the states. Still it’s the only state park dedicated exclusively to veterans of the Vietnam War. If you’re new to the area or about to relocate here, look for it just off United States Highway 64 in Angel Fire. It’s in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway. This memorial is especially moving though. See, it was started by the parents of Marine First Lieutenant David Westphall. Wesphall was one of the sixteen men killed in an ambush in Vietnam on May 22, 1968.

The Westphalls used their son’s insurance money to construct the Peace and Brotherhood Chapel that you’ll find there. It’s perched on a hillside looking out over Moreno Valley. The chapel is open day and night. So, check it out anytime you want to honor the veterans who lost their lives in Vietnam. After completion, the David Westphall Veterans Foundation continued to support the memorial’s operation. It’s interesting, because this site got so much media attention at the time that it helped to inspire the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.!
