What’s A Catch Basin?
You should know what a catch basin in, because it’s good to have it periodically cleaned and inspected if you have a structure with a catch basin. They are responsible for making sure large debris doesn’t enter a storage basin or a sewage pipe. They are an angled inlet that directs water into the drain plus a heavy grate made of metal that filters out debris. You can find them in municipal sewage systems all over the world and in some residential and business buildings.
When a catch basin accumulates too much debris, you won’t get as good of drainage. You may get flooding or bad smells. If you have a catch basin on your home, include maintenance on this as part of your normal home maintenance.
We once knew someone who moved into a home with a catch basin that was completely covered with sediment and debris. Once the catch basin was cleared out, the landscape never flooded again and the foundation of the home stayed dry. So, if you move into a new home, ask about catch basins. Find out if there are any and where they are. Then, regularly check to make sure they are free of debris. Sometimes, people don’t have them serviced as needed and you will find makeshift grates on top. Sometimes, they’ll be so overgrown, you won’t find them at all!
Catch basins are often the primary component of a landscape drainage system. They come in many sizes. They are put in areas that see a lot of standing water. Check out this cool video:
